Jargon Buster
- Arched insert - An arch shaped cast iron
insert
- Basalt black tiled hearth - Tiles are 150mm
square with a glazed satin finish, extremely hardwearing. The tiled hearths are supplied
in one piece and are cast to lightweight concrete.They are ideal for solid fuel use as
they can expand and contract with the high heat
- Basket fire - decorative cast iron fire
basket available in black or polished finish. Suitable for burning solid fuel (coal or
logs), natural gas fires, LPG gas fires or electric fires.
- Slabbed granite hearth - Slabbed granite
hearths are cut into sections & bonded to lightweight concrete with steel reinforcing.
Supplied fully assembled in one piece. They are ideal for solid fuel use as they
can expand and contract with the high heat
- Tiled Insert - Cast iron insert with
provision for decorative 5 tile panels either side of the fire opening. Suitable for
burning solid fuel (coal or logs), natural gas fires, LPG gas fires or electric fires.
- Fascia - a cast iron panel with a fireplace
opening to accept a range of gas, electric & solid fuel fires. Most Fascia have a
standard fireplace opening of 16" wide x 22" high (except the Shire Newton). A
good option if you have a precast flue as you may be restricted on depth of fire
- Inset fire - Term given to the fire which
fits into the cast iron insert
- Cast insert - General term used for a cast
iron panel
- Flue - The flue carries away the products
of combustion - several types are in use - see Flue Types
- Chimney class I - a brick built chimney,
usually with a chimney breast. Can also to refer to a metal flue system with an internal
dimension of 175mm or more - see Flue Types
- Chimney Class II - Can refer to precast
flues or prefabricated flues - see Flue Types
- Precast Flue - a narrow flue system fitted
into the inner wall of a cavity wall. No chimney breast. You may be restricted on choice
of fireplace with this kind of flue system - see Flue Types
- Prefabricated Flue - normally a 125mm
diameter flue system with a shallow depth chimney breast - see flue types

- Hearth - the hearth is the base of the
fireplace which fits onto the floor, non combustible, typically granite, stone, tiles etc
- Mantel - fire surround, typically wood,
limestone, cast iron etc
- Fire surround - mantel, typically wood,
limestone, cast iron etc
- Suite - the collective term for the
complete fireplace
- Combination cast - fire surround (mantel)
and cast insert all in cast iron
- Chimney Breast - the projection into the
room (sometimes externally) which houses the flue
- Natural gas - mains gas supply
- LPG - liquid petroleum gas, supplied in
bottles or housed in a tank
